| Happy New Year to everyone! 2017 is looking like it will be an exciting year of transition. The recent announcement from Dr. Alain Beaudet of his retirement this March leaves us reflecting on his formidable vision and leadership, which have helped to drive transformative changes in health research in Canada. Without his leadership, we wouldn’t have initiatives like the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research and its Primary and Integrated Health Care Innovation Networks, which have become the foundation for critical innovations in the way we do health services and policy research in order to be responsive to the needs of shifting health systems nationally. Although we will miss his direction, it is an opportunity to attract and capitalize on new leadership and fresh perspectives across the organization. With new Scientific Directors in the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH), the Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH), and the Institute of Aboriginal People’s Health (IAPH), we have had to say a few farewell’s recently. But we have also welcomed other new innovators and trailblazers in Dr. Brian Rowe, Dr. Stephen Hoffman, and certainly in the yet-to-be-determined Scientific Director for IAPH, all of whom will help to drive an invigorated vision for CIHR and health research.
At IHSPR, we’re hitting the ground running in 2017. With our Strategic Plan 2015-2019 as our guide, we are targeting our 4 strategic priorities (Figure 1), which were the focus of a special issue of Healthcare Papers last fall. There are exciting new funding opportunities rolling out, new tools and resources available to our community, and high impact meetings and events in the calendar, some of which are featured in this newsletter. Once again, I wish you all a great start to the new year! Sincerely, Robyn Tamblyn
