New TREC Publication: Importance of clinical educators to research use and suggestions for better efficiency and effectiveness
Lo TKT, Hoben M, Norton PG, Teare GF, Estabrooks CA. (2018). Importance of clinical educators to research use and suggestions for better efficiency and effectiveness: results of a cross-sectional survey of care aides in Canadian long-term care facilities. BMJ Open, 8:e020074.
Abstract
Objective: This study explored the effect of clinical educators as facilitators of research use and how it may be modified by organisational context in the settings.
Design: Cross-sectional observational study.
Setting: A representative sample of 91 residential long-term care (LTC) facilities across Western Canada.
Participants: We used surveys to collect data from the frontline care aides and information about the organisational context of the care units.
Outcome measure and…
As part of our TREC Measurement System (TMS) project we feed back our research findings to our participants after each wave of data collection. We fed back results in May and June by organizing feedback summits and invited participants to attend. As TMS wraps up for the season, our SCOPE project is rolling out. SCOPE also organized meetings for participants to introduce them to the study and outline how they will participate.
TMS Feedback Activities
On June 8, we successfully completed the…

New TREC Publication: Individual and organizational predictors of allied healthcare providers’ job satisfaction in residential long-term care
Aloisio LD, Gifford WA, McGilton KS, Lalonde M, Estabrooks CA, Squires JE. (2018). Individual and organizational predictors of allied healthcare providers’ job satisfaction in residential long-term care. BMC Health Services Research, 18:491.
Abstract
Background
Job satisfaction is a predictor of intention to stay and turnover among allied healthcare providers. However, there is limited research examining job satisfaction among allied health professionals, specifically in residential long-term care (LTC) settings. The purpose of this study was to identify factors (demographic, individual, and organizational) that predict job satisfaction among allied healthcare providers in residential LTC.
Methods
We conducted a secondary…

We found no Canadian research, and limited research in the United States (US), on unbefriended individuals. Unbefriended individuals are unsupported by family and friends in long term care and are under public guardianship.
Individuals who lack decision-making capacity and have no family or friends to act as their surrogate decision-maker are unbefriended. Unbefriended individuals are unsupported by family and friends, and often require a public guardian to help make personal decisions. In long term care, these individuals can be socially isolated, which may have negative social and health impacts, making this group of residents a highly vulnerable population.
As part of her doctoral research, our PhD student…

New commentary by Dr Estabrooks: Engagement-Capable Environments – No Less Challenging than other Large System Changes
Published in HealthcarePapers Volume 17, Issue 2: Experience of Care as a Critical Component of Health System Performance Measurement: Recommendations for Moving Forward
Abstract
Kuluski et al.'s (2017) argument for including a more advanced form of health system performance management centred on "the experience of care," raises the major challenge of creating and sustaining engagement-capable environments. Here I briefly address frameworks that may be useful in meeting this challenge – Complex Adaptive Systems, Innovation Diffusion, Whole System Change. I also offer a personal perspective drawn from a successful citizen engagement experience, concluding…

Baby boom, dementia explosion
By: Carol Sanders
An estimated 22,500 Manitobans have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia and that number is growing at an alarming rate, owing to the post-Second World War baby boom.
